The Nentir Vale Chronicles
Heirs to the ancient empire of Bael Turath Tieflings have no realms of their own but instead live within Human kingdoms and cities. They are descended from Human nobles who bargained with dark powers, and long ago their empire subjugated half the world. But the empire was cast down into ruin, by their war against the Dragonborn of Arkhosia, and Tieflings were left to make their own way in a world that often fears and resents them.
With the rise of the Human Empire of Nerath Tieflings were invited into the fold of civilized races. However, due to the prejudice heaped upon them by their one time subjects and their own sense of aristocratic superiority, Tieflings were denied the right to own their own land. This led to limited representation in the Nerathi Senate. Tieflings soon found themselves marginalized by society at large and either secluded or were segregated into inner city ghettos or enclaves on land that was unclaimed by all others. This resulted in a hard thankless life that many hoped would keep the Teiflings too busy scraping out an existence to make another bid for power.
Over the years this system resulted in a prideful and resentful underclass of Tieflings far removed from the Emperors of the world they once were. Known mostly as warlocks, thieves and swindlers and occasionally as itinerant merchant princes. Now with the Fall of Nerath the laws that held back Tieflings for so long are more tradition than the rule and many Tieflings are looking to re-establish their rule, take control of the land they have toiled over and perhaps even redeem their name.
Tieflings’ appearance testifies to their infernal bloodline. They have horns ranging from small and unobtrusive to large and bony; nonprehensile tails that range in length from 4 to 5 feet, thick or thin; sharply pointed teeth; and eyes that are solid orbs of black, red, white, silver, or gold. Their skin color covers the whole human range and also extends to reds, from a ruddy tan to a brick red. Their hair, cascading down from behind their horns, is as likely to be dark blue, red, or purple as more common human colors. Tieflings favor dark colors and reds, leathers and glossy furs, small spikes and buckles. Tiefling-crafted arms and armor often have an archaic style, harkening back to the glory of their long-vanished empire.
The Crucible of Devotion
The Crucible is an enclave of Tieflings that have turned their back on their infernal heritage and have instead embraced an austere religious life devoted to Baaumut. This small community is located in the Guardbury downs south of Winterhaven. Here they work tirelessly as subsitance farmers and in their devotions. They are also rather wary of outsiders and the world at large. They view the world outside their enclave as awash in temptation to fall back upon the sins of their infernal birth. As such many withing the Vale have no notion of their existence. Only the threat of true evil and injustice in the world will mobilize their Platinum Templars, such as the Bloodspear war.
